16 GAUGE CHARLES BOSWELL BOXLOCK EJECTOR GAMEGUN.
Cal. 16 Ga. 2 1/2". S# 15728 (1908). The 28" Damascus bbls. are engraved "Charles Boswell Maker 126 Strand, London W.C." on a slightly swamped game rib w/ crossbolt extension. Bbl. flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1 oz. of shot and "C. BOSWELL". Serial numbers are on bottoms of bbls, and the importer's name & address (Griffin & Howe) are marked on the bottom of the left bbl. Case-hardened boxlock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), a crossbolt third fastener, and dbl. triggers. Action is engraved w/ near full coverage, small shaded scroll surrounding bird & dog scenes, a trio of pheasants on the left side, and two pointers on the right (both sides under "Charles Boswell"). Fences are semi-relief-engraved with shaded scroll. Top lever, floorplate, & trigger guard are blued. Floorplate is engraved with scene of two gallinaceous fowl. A pointer points to other fowl on the trigger guard bow. Rnd. knob buttstock of attractively figured & marbled European walnut measures 14 1/8" over an old open-sided recoil pad. Flat top point pattern checkering is at grip, & gold oval engraved with a stag's head is on the toeline. Matching, splinter, and Deeley ejector forend with an Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .653", L .652". Restriction: R .003" (IC), L .007" (IC). Min. Wall Thickness: R .031", L .029". STOCK: DAH: 2". DAC: 1 9/16". LOP: 14 1/8". CAST: very slightly off. WEIGHT: 6 lb., 1 oz. CONDITION: good. Bbls. retain most of an old reblack, which effectively hides the Damascus pattern. Action retains strong traces of original case-hardening color where protected, but is mostly silver gray to brown. Blued parts are mostly worn to silver gray; engraving is also somewhat worn. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish with a considerable amount of marks & dings. Side panels have been pinned. Checkering is considerably worn, especially on the forend, where it is almost gone. Bores are shiny with 1 or 2 striations & evidence of some dents being raised, mostly in left bbl., about 10" behind muzzle. Action is tight. Ejectors are strong and in time. A high-quality gun that may clean up well. (22-2249/MGM). CURIO. $1,750-2,750.
