1860 Henry carbine, serial #6850. Punch dot and scratch inscribed with decorated stock and attribution to ownership by Yellowstone Kelly.The “UU” on top of receiver is the Indian sign for ‘tracks to follow’. There isthe name TA-DO, which in Indian sign means ‘meat getter’, and other punch-dot markings and scratching of “K” for Kelly. The right side of the buttstock is carved with star geometrics and “UPRR”, and other white paintmarks which were identifications. According to George Madis this Henry was purchased from the heirs of Yellowstone Kelly in 1963. Also, Kelly in his memoirs written in 1868, recants that he bought a Henry carbine and“killed many buffalo with it”. Yellowstone Kelly was chief scout for General Nelson miles in the Indian War period and was one of the most famous individuals in the Old West. He was chief scout in the pursuit of Sitting Bull after the Custer massacre and he knew the Sioux Indian tribe and their language. The carbine shows a brown patina finish, some light to slightly heavy pitting on the barrel, good markings, a period replaced
