1874 Sharps Sporting Rifle, .40 cal., serial #155063. The rifle is in overall very good to nearly fine condition with a 28” octagon barrel. The rifle sports the standard front and ladder rear sights. The barrel retains a significantamount of its muted, blued finish with light surface erosion and wear at the muzzle. The receiver has become a silver-grey patina with case color still evident in protected areas. The serial numbers match on the tang and barrel. Thesmooth wood stocks are in overall very good condition with minor surface mars and compressions consistent with use. The stock features a pewter fore end cap and crescent metal butt plate. The bore is good, the action crisp and markings aresharp. A factory letter accompanies the rifle indicating the original invoice date of December 9, 1875 and shipment to Spies, Kissom and Company of New York City. The rifle is listed as .40-50 caliber with a 1 11/16” case, single trigger, open sights and weighed 9 lbs. with oil finished stocks. All of which are consistent with its current appearance.
