1920's-40's Patriotic Naval Banner for Service in the Far East. Nice well-executed Remembrance banner for service in the U.S. Navy on the ship U.S.S. Blackhawk, dating from the 1920's to possibly the 1940's. Made of fine black velvet with a brocade silk backing, edged with gold-colored braided cord and orange fringe at the base. Beautifully embroidered with a likeness of the ship, Chinese junks, a temple, flags, dragons, and a large American eagle with lance, shield, and flag. The eagle and the dragons are in high relief with thick embroidery, and very well done. At the top it reads: ''In Memory of My Asiatic Cruise'', and has a list of all the places that the Blackhawk visited. The U.S.S. Blackhawk AD-9 was a destroyer tender that was launched in 1913, serving in the Asiatic Fleet from 1922-1940, and also serving in WWII up until decommissioned in 1946. Condition is very good for its age, the body being in excellent shape and the material still sound. The colors have faded a little on the embroidery, but is still impressive. Border cord is coming loose at the right top corner and could be repaired quite easily. There is a little bit of fringe missing at the bottom, and the bottom seam is loose for about 6''. Banner measures 37'' wide and 44'' tall. Would look really nice in a frame or shadowbox. Est.: $300-$500.
