Colt 1851 Navy revolver with history as belonging to “Dangerous Dave Rudabaugh” western outlaw and associate of “Billy the Kid”. This Colt, S/N 141775 is accompanied by a sworn statement recanting that this pistol was obtained by Joseph Thompson from Dave Rudabaugh for $15 dollars and that Thompson ran a gun shop in Mesilla, New Mexico. Joseph recalls other events surrounding a jail break where Rudabaugh obtained the pistol. The document states the revolver was brought to England in 1920 by Thomas Thompson son of Joseph Thompson. The letter is signed by A.D. Thompson of Featherstone, England dated 09/21/1981 selling the aforementioned Colt to noted international antique arms dealer Hans Schemke. A copy of 1981 English advertisement in “Collecting: Leisure newspaper listing “The Colt 1851 Navy revolver used to murder a jailer by Dave Rudabaugh etc.”. Subsequent letters from A. O. Thompson to Ron Sario, noted Colt collector, further enlightens the connection to Thompson and the Rudabaugh navy. A large research binder full of information regarding Dave Rudabaugh and his relationship to “Billy the Kid: and his gang is included. In conclusion Little Johns sold this Colt in 1981 to Ron Sario for Han Shemke who had consigned us this revolver. We were well acquainted with Hans Schemke and we verified the document and existence of Mr. Thompson and his relationship to Mesilla, New Mexico. Mr. Sario further increased the documentation as A.D. Thompson was pleased the pistol “Had a good home” and states he would have never sold the pistol except for falling on hard times. Mr. Thompson writes 8 pages of text regarding his family, the families travel to America and the opening of a gun shop in San Antonio Texas were they closed up and moved to Mesilla about 1877-78. Along with a great deal of other information on “The Kid” and New Mexico that was passed down in the Thompson family. We believe in the “Story” and historic events surrounding this Colt. Though not absolute it is well documented. (Antique) Est.: $12000-24000
