19RH-134 COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVERS
Pair of elaborately Gustave Young engraved Colt 1851 Navy revolvers in deluxe rosewood brass bound case lined in French style with small trigger guards and Numbered 41939 & 41947. Formerly in the William Locke collection and pictured in the book of his collection. This cataloger (John R. Gangel AKA “Little John”) has been familiar with this set since 1974 when sold by Robert ‘Bob” Berryman principle seller of the Locke Collection to iconic Colt collector “Johnnie” Bassett. Basset sold them in 1976 to old time collector John Woodard. John Woodard consigned them to Little John in 1980 and they were sold to our current consignor and out of circulation 40 years. Both Woodard and Bassett were impressed by the fine detail tto the engraving and the deluxe nature of the casing. The pistols retain the majority of their blue and case colored finishes with some flaking and loss due to the high polish finish. The cylinder scenes and blue with Ornsby signature still visible. The grips are varnished burl walnut and remain in fine to excellent condition. The straps retain almost all their original sliver plate. The metal shows very little to no firing as front of the hammers and muzzles are excellent. All matching serial numbers. The rosewood case is fine to excellent and absolutely genuine. Minor impressions and slight normal aging. The pulls and compartment covers are the originals. The case is equipped with a deluxe English flask that is slightly undersized (Possibly for easier removal from deep case). The deluxe tapered leg mold shows some dings and dents. The nipple wrench shows 90% blue. The exterior is very good plus with two long age cracks from weather. A personal not: In 50+ years of selling deluxe and important Colt’s these remain in the top tier of engraved sets I have examined as the engraving shows that “Little Extra” young put into the best 1% of his masterpieces. Described by John R. Gangel. (Antique) Est.: $50,000-$100,000
