Rare and Genuine 19th Century U.S. Patent Office Model ''Breech-Loading Fire-Arm'', Patent No. 86091 granted to L.A. Merriam on Jan. 19, 1869, being a cylindrical walnut ''powder-chamber'' measuring 4.75'' overall, consisting of a 2.875'' x 1.75'' hollow cup-like device with threaded portion onto which fits a 3'' insert with threaded round brass cap, into which a separate 1.875'' brass ''firing pin'' (?) fits; all three are joined by a aged tan ribbon. It is unusual in that the model does not seem to exactly correlate with the patent drawing and description, yet they appear to go together. Device is simple yet well made. Accompanying the model is a clear plastic holder containing a 3'' x 3.25'' manila card tag marked ''No. 86091/L.A. Merriam/Breech-Loading/Fire-Arm./Patented Jan. 19th/1869'' attached to a faded red ribbon, and two Patent Office copies illustrating this device with its description and operation. Condition of the model is fine, the 1869 tag is rather fragile as expected, the patent copies fine. Est.: $200-$400.
