Rare and Genuine 19th Century U.S. Patent Office Model ''Percussion Cap Box'', Patent No. 43497 granted to Thomas Harvey of Baltimore, MD on July 12, 1864, consisting of a circular brass canister measuring 4'' dia. by 1'' deep not including the 1.25'' dia. ratcheted cog wheel at top; inside is a double-row toothed device that rotates to dispense percussion caps singly when the outside cog is turned. Cap box is simple yet well made. Accompanying the model is a clear plastic holder containing a 3''x3.25'' manila card tag marked ''No. 43497/T. Harvey/Percussion Cap Box./Patented Jul. 12th/1864'', another salmon-color card marked ''T. Harvey/Passed May 30/Percussion Cap Box/Revised Feb. 27, 1864/'64'' (bound together by a faded red ribbon), and two Patent Office copies illustrating this device with its description and operation. Condition of the patent model is fine, the two 1864 tags are rather fragile as expected, the rest fine. Est.: $250-$450.
