19th Century M1875 USMC Officers Sword.
Ricasso is marked with maker "Jacob Reed's Sons" which went out of business in 1883. Very scarce19th century version of the USMC M1875 officer’s 'Mameluke'. 19th century versions of this sword are quite hard to find. The scarcity is due to the small size of the Marine Corps at this time. At the turn of the century there were fewer than 300 Marine on active duty at any given time. The 29" blade is slightly curved and carries a single broad fuller for most of its length that divides into two narrow fullers, nicely strengthening it for a thrust, about 12 inches from the spear point tip. The blade is smooth metal, in the bright, with good edges and tip. On both sides a central panel is etched with swallow-tail banner reading, “US MARINES” between to foliate terminal E/G/A, American flag motifs. The brass guard with double langets and acorn finials, two star-embossed rivet caps on either side of the nice ivory grip. The hole for the sword knot in the pommel has brass washers, period brown leather sword knot in place. The regulation scabbard has brass fittings. Overall very good condition, grip, brass fittings are excellent, sword knot is worn with some scuffs, the blade is bright, no nicks, but has some scattered spots of dark pitting. These swords are very scarce, and do not appear often. A rare opportunity to acquire one.
