1) This is an M1850 foot officer’s sword measuring 37 1/4" overall with a 31" etched blade. Etching includes foliate and scrollwork along with patriotic and military motifs. The blade is also etched near the ricasso "W.H. HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADA". Gilded brass hilt with pierced guard showing a foliate motif. Standard pommel with wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass-mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with clear etching. Hilt retains traces of its original gilded finish. Grip and wire are complete. Scabbard mounts show traces of the original gilded finish. Leather body has a repair at about the midpoint and does show epoxy near the tip. 2) A good example of a presentation M1852 naval officer’s sword measuring 34 3/4" overall with a 28 1/2" blade. The blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. Blade is etched with various military, nautical, and foliate motifs. The ricasso is stamped "W. CLAUBERG (knight) SOLINGEN". Gilded brass hilt with pierced guard that includes "USN". Dolphin head knuckle bow and quillon. Oak leaf decorated pommel with an eagle and stars at the top. White sharkskin grip with wire wrap. Gilded brass-mounted leather scabbard. The top mount of the scabbard is engraved "Presented TO Charles E. Tucker From His Friends of West Troy Jan. 8th 1863". CONDITION: the blade has been severely sharpened. The hilt shows light to moderate wear. The grip and wire are complete. Scabbard remains solid; however, most of the black finish of the leather has flaked away. (02-22950-1/BF). $1,200-1,500.
