1) LARGE CALIBER PERCUSSION PLAINS RIFLE BY CHILD & CO. OF ST. LOUIS. Cal. 56. NSN. Bbl. 33 1/4", heavy oct., under rib is fitted w/ V-notch rear & brass blade front sights. Top flat behind rear sight stamped "CHILD, & CO." "ST. LOUIS. MO." (1850-1863). Rear of top flat stamped "ENTERPRISE GUNWORKS" over a prancing deer logo. (Trade name of James Brown circa 1848-1890.) Front spring percussion lock is not maker marked, but has rudimentary game scene engraving on tail. Half stock of red stained curly maple has sm. right hand cheekpiece & pewter end cap. It is brass mounted & crescent buttplate has 3" return. Trigger guard w/ lg. bow has raised, scrolled tail. Right side of stock fitted w/ ovate German silver patch box w/ fancy outline which contains a worm. Sideplate is round w/ square key at bottom. CONDITION: very good. Bbl. & lock w/ heavy dark brown patina & some areas of cleaning. Stock w/ old refinish. Sharp lines rounded & some repairs of bbl. channel, 9" piece on right side & 4 1/2" piece on left. Good bore, mostly shiny over scattered pitting. Lock & set triggers operate correctly. (01-19026/MGM). 2) LIGHTWEIGHT HALF STOCK PERCUSSION RIFLE BY A. PHARRISTON OF ROCKY MOUNT TENNESSEE WHO DIED IN 1860. Cal. 42. NSN. Bbl. 36", oct. w/ V- notch, buckhorn rear & silver blade front sights. Hand engraved "A. PHARRISTON" on breech end of top flat. Unmarked front spring percussion lock has stamped on scroll engraving. Double triggers are fitted. American walnut half stock w/ sm. right hand cheekpiece, does not have a metal nose cap. Rifle is brass mounted. Crescent butt, has 5" pointed return. Trigger guard has curled spur at rear. Sideplate is oblong. Stock is further decorated w/ inlaid brass, star & moon on right side of butt & a silver oval above cheekpiece. There is an oblong mother of pearl inlay at top of grip & brass diamonds are inlet on sides of forend. CONDITION: fair to good. Metal parts w/ considerable wear, rusting & cleaning are silver gray to brown patina w/ scattered pitting. Stock heavily refinished. Brass also w/ considerable wear has toned to a dark mustard color. Bore is poor, but rifling is evident. Set triggers work, but lock often does not fire. Hammer screw replaced. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19028/MGM).
