1) Overall length: 29". Blade length: 23 3/4". Plain blade with a black wooden 2 piece grip. There is a paper label on the blade that reads in part "COLLINS & CO HARTFORD" with extensive text in Spanish. No scabbard. There is a tag included from the consignor that reads "December 8, 1898—Walter J. Gray Troop I, 3rd U.S. Cavalry at San Juan Hill with 1st USVC Ft. Ethan Allen, VT. Under 1st Brigade (General Sumner) and Gen. Joseph Wheeler—Cavalry Division US Army V Corps—Maj. William Shafter". CONDITION: machete shows storage wear but is likely unissued. 2) Overall length: 31 1/4". Blade length: 26 1/4". Plain blade stamped near the ricasso "(logo) LEGITIMUS COLLINS & CO. HARTFORD ACERO FINO CALIDAD GARANTIZADA No. 22". 2 Piece green horn grip. Brown leather scabbard embossed "COLLINS & CO (logo) LEGITIMUS". Scabbard has tooled decoration on the front and an ink inscription on the back that reads "Cuban machete used by Cubans 1897-1898". CONDITION: machete shows light wear with staining to the blade. Scabbard shows moderate wear with some losses, particularly at the tip. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19890/BF). $300-500.
