These knives were developed for flying personnel & were also used by the 2nd US Marine Raider Battalion. These knives were made under contract by Case, Western, Kinfolks & Collins. The Western made knives are the most scarce. 1: Western V44 has a 9 1/4 Bowie style blade w/ 2 longitudinal grooves. 14 1/2" overall. Blade is marked on the left side "WESTERN". Straight steel crossguard. 2 piece Bakelite grips retained by 3 steel rivets. Correct tan leather sheathe made w/ the large type rivets, leather belt loop & snap type retaining strap. CONDITION: knife has a very good appearance w/ only light handling wear. Metal parts retain their original bright finish. Sheathe has minor flexing at tip, light wear & scattered spots of staining. Stitching & rivets are tight. 2: Case V44. 9 3/8" blade. 14 1/4" overall. Bright blade w/ 2 longitudinal grooves on each side. Blade is marked on left side "CASE XX". Brass crossguard w/ ball finials. 1 piece Bakelite handle retained w/ 3 poured lead rivets. Correct unmarked brown leather sheathe. Belt loop made w/o retaining strap. Scabbard is made in 1 piece & stitched on reverse side. CONDITION: blade retains most of its bright finish w/ scattered small spots of oxidation throughout. Crossguard has turned a mild patina. Handle shows light wear & tiny handling marks. Sheathe has moderate wear, flexing & staining w/ notable flexing at tip. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: padded black nylon case. (02-23679/RW).
