"Lifecycle," Michael Stewart, photographer. Kilauea Eruption, October 1999. 20x24 solid Koa frame and matting.
A 15-foot wall of A'a lava consumes a large 50-foot Ohia tree on the Pulama Pali at dusk. The tree sways and burns under the rising heat of the flow as it enters the island’s renewal process; a life cycle of creation and destruction.
Michael moved to the islands in 1991, relocating from San Jose. His renowned Kilauea eruption images have been created through years of dedication with the utmost patience waiting on the flow fields for the right combination of color, balance and intensity to capture those special moments that the volcano delivers. Michael shoots only traditional film for superior definition and clarity. He avoids color filters and enjoys using natural light at dawn and dusk to embrace the incredible volcanic palette
