Artist Statement:
I’m proud to support the goal of the Mule Deer Foundation which is to ensure the conservation of deer and their habitat. Growing up in the mountains of Utah, I’ve always been fascinated by deer and have spent a lot of time tracking, hunting, and photographing them. For the past few years, I’ve been able to help the Mule Deer Foundation supply winter feed for the deer on the ranch I work for. There is a lot of winter kill due to high levels of snow, and small amounts of food.

My drawing, “Down from the High Country,” represents the deer coming down during the rut to their winter range in the lower country. This specific buck that I drew spent many winters on the ranch. Although many hunted him, he continued to elude hunters and predators each year. I was always excited to see that he survived another year and was fortunate enough to find his shed antlers two separate years. I spent many hours on the detail in the sage brush and on the deer, and chose to use graphite pencils because of the deep blacks I can use to emphasize those details. I want the deer to appear as realistic as possible, so I spend a lot of time studying them to ensure I get the anatomy accurate. Just as a side note, my wife wanted to me title this one “Sagebrush Romance.”

Bringing awareness to protecting wildlife and their habitat is an important and worthwhile project. I hope you enjoy this piece, which is the first of a series I will be drawing for the Mule Deer Foundation.

About Artist:
Seth Hadlock was born and raised in Liberty, Utah and has spent his life working with animals and exploring the mountains. Seth, along with his wife and two kids, works on a cattle ranch with his granddad, raises horses and beef and corriente cows with his dad, is a horse trainer, and competes as a steer wrestler in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association.
Seth grew up watching his mother paint horses and became interested in art at a young age. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. His favorite medium is graphite and charcoal because it gives his art an older, antique look and he can capture small details, like a horse's eyes or the stitching of a bridle. He focuses his art on realism and accurate detail.

Seth spends his free time helping his kids learn to work with horses and compete in youth rodeo, creating art, and serving on the Wilderness Circuit Finals Rodeo committee. You can see more of his work on sethhadlockart.com or @SethHadlockArt on Facebook and Instagram.
