The choices facing Oregon bighorn sheep hunters are tough: uplifted rock faces, deep river canyons, or high desert mountain ranges; jet boating America’s deepest river gorge, wrangling horses, or backpacking. However, with the perseverance sheep hunters are known for, the benefits can be spectacular. Hunting success is consistent 95% or higher. Oregon bighorn sheep hunters consistently take Rocky Mountain bighorn rams over 180 inches, have booked over 20 rams greater than 190 inches, and a state record Rocky Mountain bighorn of 203 5/8 Boone and Crockett score. California bighorn hunters in Oregon consistently see rams over 170 and have taken 65 over 175 with 10 of these scoring over 180. In 2022, the new world record California bighorn was taken in Oregon, scoring an amazing 191 4/8 Boone and Crockett. Any individual interested in hunting bighorn sheep in Oregon can bid on the 2025 Oregon Special Bighorn auction tag, even those who have previously held an Oregon bighorn sheep tag. For a minimum bid price of $25,000, the successful bidder will have a 4-month season running from August – November. The season for this special auction tag opens prior to all other controlled bighorn hunts in Oregon, giving exclusive early access to the herds. This includes all Rocky Mountain and California bighorn hunts with authorized tags in 2025. An Oregon Hunting License (resident or nonresident) is included if the successful bidder does not already have a license. All funds generated from the special bighorn auction tag are statutorily dedicated specifically for bighorn sheep management and research in Oregon. Ten percent of the purchase price is donated to WSF. The continued leveraging strength provided by this program has allowed the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife to develop one of the most successful bighorn restoration programs in the country and participate as a leader in research and management programs that ensure wild bighorn sheep will continue to be an integral part of our heritage.
