Colt Model 1839 Paterson Carbine S/N 323 in .52 caliber showing "W.A.T." marking on the stock indicating U.S. Government purchase with attached loading lever and round back cylinder. This Paterson was recently discovered in Northern California and had been in the collection of R.E. Hefner of Susanville, CA who started collecting before WWI and who obtained many arms including a Jim Bridger gun from from H.C. Flourney of Bidwells Bar California where his father Robert S. Flourney arrived in 1849 after traveling west. A tag with this Paterson and verbal history allegeds travel from Texas during the gold rush. This carbine remains in fair to poor condition showing many old repairs and cleaning. The Colt markings on the side of the barrel and on the cylinder are partially visible. The trigger guard is an old frontier repair. Old copper flux has been used to fill and repair metal. The stock shows retaining and old repair to the bad breaks but the "W.A.T." cartouche is lightly visible under the stain. The action is broken and frozen and only 1 serial number is visible inside the hard worn interior. An old square handmade swivel has been added to the butt stock and is of the period. Also the trigger length is increased and may have been extended to use with this oversize guard and a gloved hand. This Paterson is down the ladder on condition but very interesting as to being carried west and found in one of California oldest collection.
