Colt 1851 Navy 1st Model Revolver Factory engraved with rare wedge over screw variation, S/N 697 and made for Crystal Palace exhibition. Among the rarest and most desirable of all engraved percussion colt experts estimate less than a dozen of the wedge over screw variation were produced likely for display at the Crystal Palace exhibition where Colt introduced the new 1851 Model Navy revolver. The subject revolver is engraved in the early open vine scroll motif and remains in very good plus condition with approximately 30%-50% original blue on the barrel that has aged evenly with sharp edges and good markings. The cylinder shows almost all of its scene with clear engagement dates and Ornsby signature. The cylinder is a gray patina with a few small areas of erosion and spotting from age. The frame, hammer and loading lever show 30%-50% early smoky gray case hardening with some light colors in the patina. The straps show most of the original silver plate which is thick and uncleaned. The grips are also very good plus with 75%-85% original varnish showing minor scratches, dings, mars and very small losses at the toes. The grips fit impeccably. Crisp and sharp markings with all matching serial numbers. Contained with an original English style partition case with label in the lid. The red lined velveteen interior is very good plus with minor aging, small tatters and normal impressions. The silver plated flask shows period inscription “Crystal Palace” in script. A good mold, nipple wrench and cap tin are included. Also an enameled pin which purportedly was gifted by Colt at the Crystal Palace exhibition is included with this lot.
A world class collector’s Colt which was a crown jewel in the Gary Wiemann Navy collection. The flask and medal is illustrated on Page 197 Fig 16-6 and 16-5 in the “Colt 1851 and 1861 Navies & Conversions” book by Jordan. (Antique) Est.: $35,000-$70,000

Shipping can take up to 6-8 weeks. Buyer pays all packing, material, handling, shipping costs and 2% of invoice amount for insurance.
