WEAPONS.
1) BAYONET. A fine example of an M1873 US trowel bayonet for the 45\70 trapdoor Springfield rifle. Bayonet itself measures 14 1/2" overall with a 10” blade. A wide slightly cupped blade with a lower medial ridge. All metal socket with original walnut handle intact. The socket is stamped “PAT APR 16-72”. Bayonet has a type 3 leather scabbard with leather belt loop and “US” round boss. CONDITION: bayonet has areas of oxidation on the blade that a good cleaning would help tremendously. The socket has significant original bluing. The scabbard is quite solid and has only minor flexing at the loop joint.
2) ENTRENCHING TOOL. A very nice example of an M1880 US Army entrenching tool. The tool itself measures 13” overall with an 8 3/4" blade that is a full 3 1/2" wide. Turned oak handle stamped “US” at the base. Leather scabbard marked “A.C.DAMON” at the tip with a “U.S.” stamp at the top near the brass throat. Suspension ring is intact. CONDITION: blade shows minor staining with some evidence of sharpening. Handle & scabbard show light wear.
3) HUNTING KNIFE. A fine example of a M1880 US Army hunting knife. The knife itself measures 13 1/2" in length with an 8 1/2" blade. The brass guard is stamped “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” on one side and is numbered “4275” on the opposite side. Turned oak handle. Leather type 3 scabbard with a brass throat and brass belt hook marked “WATERVLIET ARSENAL.” on the reverse. The top of the scabbard itself is also partially marked “____RLEIT ____NAL”. CONDITION: blade has minor scattered staining. Hilt shows light wear with a bit of verdigris on the guard. Scabbard is quite solid with minor flexing at the top. (02-17938/BF). $1,200-1,500.
