3 POST CIVIL WAR US MILITARY KEPIS & HATS.

1) INDIAN WAR. A scarce example of a regulation enlisted contract US kepi. Body of kepi is dark blue w/ leather chinstrap terminated by 2 M1872 enlisted cuff buttons. Bound leather visor. Brown sweatband is marked, “Horstmann Bros. & Co. Philadelphia Contract May 1889”. Interior has a black polished cotton liner. Untouched enlisted kepis are seldom seen in today’s market. CONDITION: hat shows 1 sm. moth hole. Visor & chinstrap are sturdy. Sweatband has a few age cracks & splits but remains substantially complete. Liner is undamaged.
2) SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. A seldom seen example of a late 1800’s naval cap as worn by the New York Naval Militia. Cap has a faded blue crown w/ a black band. Band features an embroidered silver & gold bullion cap insignia for the NYNM. Gold cord chinstrap w/ naval side buttons. Bound leather visor. Brown sweatband. Padded liner marked, “404 MARKET STREET. RUMFORD BROS. WILMINGTON, DEL.”. CONDITION: crown has some fading due to years of use. Visor is a bit crazed. The remainder of the hat is quite strong & shows well.
3) INDIAN WAR. A classic example of a state owned militia kepi following federal regulations from the Indian War to the Spanish American War. This Virginia hat has a dark blue body & sewn on gold embroidered crossed rifles w/ “4” above. Gold cord chinstrap terminated by 2 Virginia staff buttons. Bound leather visor & light brown leather chinstrap. Brown silk liner drawn together at the top. CONDITION: hat has a few scattered moth nips. Body of hat is strong. Visor is slightly crazed. Sweatband shows moderate wear. Liner is complete but detached in a few areas. (02-15765/BF). $1,000-1,200.
