Drills (bit braces too) were made by The Ruger Corp. right after World War II with various styles including a shape that became the Standard Auto pistol. Ruger's tools were of fine quality. They could not compete with Stanley, Millers Falls and others in regards to pricing or promotions. The Ruger Corp. went bankrupt. Using $50,000 of start up money from Alexander Sturm, Ruger and Sturm bought the tooling needed for pistol manufacturing at the bankruptcy sale; the rest is enviable history. Very collectable for those who are looking for early historical extras in their Ruger collections. Very difficult to find examples as nice as these restored pieces. Caps on butt ends of pistol shaped drills are for bit storage. Tube shaped drill has red screw in cap for bit storage. Company name is on barrel of pistol grip drills and on handle of tube drill. All have been reblued plus fresh red paint on the gear wheels. Barrels and chucks of pistol drills have been cleaned to in the white. Plain pistol drill is earliest type with rectangular cross piece to holding gear wheel pivot. Its handle with aluminum knob has 2 positions to allow speed or power in cranking. Engraved pistol drill is not factory engraved; likely an exercise that would help to hide any condition issues before refinishing. Standard gear wheel lever with black painted wooden knob. Later, easier to produce model with round cross pin to support gear wheel pivot. Tube drill has knurled body and all blued except 2 position handle with company name and chuck teeth. All function very smooth including their 1/4" chucks. (02-21369/NW). $750-1,000.
