3 US M1881 HELMETS.
1) INFANTRY. This is an infantry officers helmet of the 2nd Infantry. The helmet body is constructed in 4 pieces with a partial red silk liner and a brown sweatband. The front plate has an eagle with a separately applied shield & crossed rifles. Mounted on the shield is the numeral “2”. The side buttons have crossed rifles. Correct officers chain link chinstrap. Spike with oak leaf base. CONDITION: light wear overall.
2) SIGNAL CORPS. This is an enlisted 1st Model Signal Corps helmet. The helmet body is 1 piece construction with no interior label. The front plate has a staff eagle with crossed signal flags. The side buttons are early crossed flags matching the front plate. The plume & helmet cords are bright orange. CONDITION: helmet body is quite solid with some wear to the edge. Helmet cords do not include the aiguilette and waffles. Plume holder & base have different patinas but both are original. Wingnut is a bit large causing the plume holder to be loose.
3) SIGNAL CORPS. This is an enlisted 2nd Model Signal Corps helmet. The helmet body is 1 piece construction with an interior label that reads “RAYMOLD & WHITLOCK MILITARY Contract, June 4, 1883 GOODS 39 West 14th St., N. Y.”. The front plate has a staff eagle with the newer large crossed signal flags & torch insignia on the shield. The side buttons are later crossed flags & torch matching the front plate. The plume & helmet cords are black. CONDITION: helmet body is quite solid. Helmet cords do not include the aiguilette and waffles. Plume holder & base have similar patinas.
