1) M1860. A fine M1860 cavalry saber with an overall length of 43" and a blade length of 34 3/4". Plain blade featuring a single large fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped "U.S A.D.K 1863" and "AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS." Solid brass hilt with two-branch, semi-basket guard. Leather grip with wire wrap. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows substantial original factory polish. Hilt has a pleasing patina. Grip shows some loss of finish but is complete, as is the wire. Scabbard is undamaged and shows a mottled, gray/brown patina. 2) M1840. A fine example of an M1840 light artillery saber measuring 40" overall with a 32" blade. The plain blade has a single wide fuller and is stamped at the ricasso "U.S W.C 1862." Solid brass hilt with standard pommel. Leather grip with brass wire wrap. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows traces of original factory polish. Hilt is undamaged. Leather shows wear but retains the original leather in protected areas. Wire is 100%. Scabbard has a few shallow dents but remains solid. 3) M1840. An example of a US M1840 musician’s sword measuring 34 1/2" overall with a 28 1/4" blade. Plain blade with a single medium fuller stamped at the ricasso "Made by AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE. MASS" and "US H.D.H. 1864." Solid brass hilt. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a mottled, gray patina. Hilt shows a pleasing deep mustard patina. 4) M1860. A post-Civil War period M1860 staff and field officer’s sword measuring 36 1/2" overall with a 30" blade. The blade has a raised medial ridge and is etched with military, patriotic, and foliate motifs. There is no maker’s mark on the blade. Gilded brass hilt with a single eagle-decorated guard. Knuckle bow is embellished with a spray of arms, and the pommel has an American eagle on one side. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass-mounted iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows areas of original factory polish. Hilt is a bit loose, slightly misshaped, and shows only traces of original gilding. Leather grip is 85%, and the wire is complete. Scabbard mounts show only traces of original gilding, and the body retains 40% of original plating. (02-22950-2/BF). $1,000-1,400.
