INDEPENDENCE & 1 SIGNER OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES. This fine group of early autographs includes the following signatures.
1) BENJAMIN HARRISON, 1726-1791. A signed 5 line note by Harrison who was a signer & former Governor of Virginia. His famous family plantation was named “Berkeley”. Harrison attended William & Mary College & served the State of Virginia in various capacities until his death.
2) ROBERT TREAT PAINE, 1731-1814. A signed 3 line note by Paine who was a signer & a member of the First Continental Congress. He was from Massachusetts & was in charge of the mfg. of gun powder during the Revolutionary War. He attended Harvard & was very active in Massachusetts politics. He served on the Supreme Court of Massachusetts from 1790-1804 when he retired because of extreme deafness.
3) JOHN MORTON, 1724-1777. An 18 pence note signed by Morton who was a signer & served for several years in the Colonial Assembly of Pennsylvania. He has only 3 months of formal schooling & received condemnation from many people of his home state because of his support of independence. He died in April of 1777, 9 months after signing the Declaration.
4) JOHN HART, 1711-1779. A 1 shilling 6 pence note autographed by
Hart who was a signer & served in the Colonial Assembly of New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey Committee of Safety & served in the Provincial Congress of New Jersey. He was elected Speaker of New Jersey’s first General Assembly.
5) SAMUEL HUNTINGTON, 1731-1796. A pay voucher dated 1777 from Huntington who was a signer & president of the Continental Congress. This may be a secretary signed document. Huntington was apprenticed as a cooper before he began studying law. He was elected to the Colonial Assembly & was the King’s attorney for Connecticut for 9 years. He was appointed to the Superior Court of Connecticut & served as its chief justice. Huntington also served as Governor of the State of Connecticut.
6) RUFUS KING, 1755-1827. A 1 page letter signed by King, a native of Scarborough, Maine who signed the Constitution of the United States. He graduated from Harvard in 1777 & served as an aid to General Glover & General Sullivan during the Revolutionary War. He helped draft the Constitution of the United States & served as a senator from New York. In 1796, King was appointed Minister to Great Britain. King served the fledgling nation in many capacities during his career. Included w/ this signature is an early lithograph of King w/ a facsimile signature. CONDITION: all notes are quite legible & reasonably undamaged w/ clear signatures & solid paper. The 2 pieces of currency show some wear but signatures are clear. The letter from King is exceptionally nice w/ clear bold writing & no notable imperfections. (02-15491/BF). $2,000-3,000.
