5 CDV IMAGES OF THE CIVIL WAR PERIOD.
1) A nice CDV image of an artillery enlisted man wearing a shell jacket with a M1851 sword belt plate & belt. He wears an 1840 light artillery sword that is partially visible. His feathered slouch hat beside him may be an adapted Hardee hat. The hat shows crossed cannons below the number "2" and has what appears to be an enlisted hat cord. The back mark reads "PHOTOGRAPHED BY TYLER, Easton, PA." CONDITION: image remains quite crisp with only slight wear to the corners. Image is held in a lucite holder. 2) A good CDV image of a cavalry enlisted man wearing a shell jacket with a M1851 sword belt plate & belt. He wears an 1840 cavalry saber that is carried in his right hand. He wears his kepi that has no apparent insignia. The background is an artillery scene. There is no back mark. CONDITION: image remains quite clear with some minor discoloration & edge wear. Image is held in a lucite holder. 3) A nice CDV image of a cavalry enlisted man wearing a shell jacket with a M1851 sword belt plate & belt. He wears an 1860 cavalry saber that he rests his hands on. There is a Colt 1860 Army pistol tucked into his belt. The background is plain. There is no back mark. CONDITION: image remains quite clear with discoloration & edge wear. The reverse appears to have been glued into an album at some point in time and has residue on the back. Image is held in a lucite holder. 4) A fine CDV image of an artillery enlisted man wearing a shell jacket with a M1851 sword belt plate & belt. He wears an M1840 light artillery sword that is mostly visible. He has a holstered pistol on his belt. His headgear appears to be a non-regulation slouch hat. The background is an idyllic forest scene. The back mark reads "BOWDOIN, TAYLOR & CO. 204 King, Cor. Columbus Street, Alexandria, Va." CONDITION: image remains crisp & clear with only slight wear to the corners. There is a very small tear in the bottom border that appears to be reinforced with archival tape. Image is held in a lucite holder. 5)An interesting CDV showing a bust view of a Civil War soldier who is likely Confederate. He wears a crushed slouch hat and has a pistol across his chest. There appears to be bullion decoration on his colored collar. The uniform has a cross belt with what appears to be an oval buckle. The back mark reads in part "G.B. Smith, 4th Street, Bristol, E. Tenn." CONDITION: image has been trimmed at the base and has some small gouges to the image. The paper has yellowed some, but overall the image remains clear. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18656/BF). $400-600.
