1) AUSTRIAN. Overall length: 28 1/4". Blade length: 21 3/4". An Austrian short sword, likely for the artillery, with a plain, single fullered blade, marked at the ricasso "WINTERNITZ (logo) STEYR". Plated semi-basket hilt with wire wrapped sharkskin grip. Plated scabbard with a button frog stud. CONDITION: sword shows light overall wear. Scabbard has one dent and one spot of oxidation. 2) POLISH. Overall length: 37 3/4". Blade length: 32 1/2". A good Polish Huta Ludwikow Kielce S Wz 34 Cavalry sword with a plain blade showing a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is marked "H. LUDWIKOW KIELCE" and "S WZ 34". Brass D-guard hilt with elongated hexagonal languet. 2-piece wood grip with diagonal ridges. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has an overall dark patina with oxidation near the tip. Hilt has a dark, mellow patina. Grip is undamaged. 3) GERMAN. Overall length: 33 1/4". Blade length: 20 1/4". Etched blade marked at the ricasso with 2 opposing squirrels and the letters "CE". Etching includes various foliate motifs along with ships and crowned, fouled anchors. Gilded brass hilt with folding rear guard. The forward guard has an oval with a crowned anchor. Well-articulated lion's head pommel with a wire wrapped certifiably antique ivory grip. Leather scabbard with gilded brass mounts. There is a bullion sword knot attached to the scabbard. CONDITION: the blade was likely broken and has been severely shortened. The hilt retains areas of original gilded finish and the grip shows a few drying cracks. The scabbard has breaks and loses to the leather, however the mounts are complete and show a pleasing tarnish. 4) EUROPEAN. A mid-19th century European infantry hanger measuring 29 1/4" overall with a 23 1/8" blade. Plain blade with a brass hilt and downturned quillon. Reeded wood grip and a brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade shows significant oxidation. The hilt has a dark tarnish finish and the grip remains solid with no leather covering. The scabbard is a bit dry but quite solid. Mounts have a tarnished and stained finish. 5) EUROPEAN. Overall length: 40". Blade length: 33". This medical officer's sword is quite similar to a US M1860 staff and field officer's sword and likely dates to the same period. The plain blade has a 13 1/4" double narrow fuller. Gilded brass hilt with an inside folding guard. The outside guard has a snake wrapped around a magnifying glass, enclosed by wreath. Wire-wrapped, polished horn grip with a leather sword knot attached. Plated scabbard. CONDITION: sword shows light wear overall and the knot shows moderate wear. 6) SAXON. Overall length: 38". Blade length: 32". Plain blade with a single medium fuller. Plated semi-basket guard encompassing the Saxon arms within a circle. Brown composite grip with plated ferrule and pommel. Plated scabbard. CONDITION: this sword, for some reason, has been disassembled but all parts appear to be present and in solid condition, except for the pommel nut. It also is apparent that at some time the tang of the blade has been welded. (02-23831/BF) $800-1,100.
