73RD TANK BATTALION COLORS FLAG.

4’ x 3’ embroidered double applique colors with crest and motto: “HONOR, FIDELITY, COURAGE”.
73rd Tank originally in 1941 the 76th Tank Battalion, a light armor command. In May, however, it was redesignated the 756th Tank Battalion.
On January 24, 1943, the battalion landed in North Africa taking part in the campaign to drive the German and Italian troops from the continent. With that mission accomplished, the battalion landed at Salerno in Italy in September taking part in the offensive to conquer Italy and drive them from the war. Pulled from that front, the battalion was attached to the 3rd Infantry Division and made ready for the invasion of Southern France which took place in mid-August 1944.
Driving north along the Rhone River valley, the U.S. Seventh Army linked up near Strasbourg with Allied units that had come across France from Normandy. The battalion took part in the heavy fighting eliminating the Colmar Pocket before resting for operations to cross the Rhine River into Germany. This took place on March 26, 1945 and the battalion with its division, drove into Austria when they ended the war in May. Two members of the battalion were awarded the Medal of Honor.
In 1948 73rd was reactivated again and in January 1949 it was redesignated as the 73rd Heavy Tank Battalion (armor flags would be green instead of yellow after abolishment of cavalry February 21, 1947). With the coming of the Korean War in 1950, the battalion was shipped to South Korea to help repel the North Korean attack and take part in the U.N. counter-offensive that drove the North Koreans out before settling into a static front until 1953 when an armistice ended the fighting. During this time they were part of the 7th Infantry Division.
The flag of the battalion is yellow reflecting armor’s history coming from the U.S. cavalry. Yellow is the official cavalry color.
