8 BORE DANGEROUS GAME PERCUSSION RIFLE BY I.

HOLLIS & SONS. Cal. 8 bore .860" groove diameter, 7 groove rifling. NSN. 28" Tapered octagon bbl. is engraved "I. Hollis & Sons London" behind one standing, two folding express rear sight and "Made Expressly For F&C" in front. Bottom of brl is stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs and "8" (bore). Bbl. is fitted with wood underib which appears to be original, most likely to reduce weight. Breech plug has some rudimentary scroll engraving. Front spring island type percussion lock with large serpentine hammer has lockplate engraved with maker's name and some scroll, it also has two stamps: monogram "IHS" surrounded by "Makers to Her Majesty's War Department". Rifle is iron mounted, with the exception of a German silver nosecap. Trigger guard with stylized pineapple type finial has scroll on bow and checkered spur at rear forming grip. Lightly figured European walnut stock measures 14 5/8" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant German silver oval is on toeline. Newer hickory ramrod with brass tip and tail mounts through two line turned pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: good, showing considerable use and light cleaning overall. Bbl. retaining traces of original brown with twist pattern evident. Otherwise metal shows cleaning over some rusting and is mostly pewter gray patina. Stock retains a fair amount of what is possibly it's original finish with added oil as maintenence over many marks and dings. Bore is very good, mostly shiny with strong rifling and a considerable amount of scattered pitting toward muzzle. Lock is good. Top tang shows welded repair around action pin. (01-21782/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
