A FINE CIVIL WAR OR EARLIER US INFANTRY DRUM.

This drum measures approx. 17 1/4" high with a diameter of 17". The drum is signed with a dip pen on the inside “S. Osgood Raymond, NH”. It is quite likely this drum was made before the Civil War and pressed into service by a New Hampshire or possibly Maine infantry regiment before they left the state. The rims and top of the drum have black flourished decoration and the center of the drum has a painted eagle holding a ribbon that reads “REG: U.S. INFANTRY”. The painted section measures approx. 18" x 10 1/2". The ropes show great age and are possibly original to the drum. There is only one tightener remaining on the ropes. The top skin appears original but has warped out of shape and needs to be steamed and reset. The bottom skin is a reasonably modern replacement. A fine large drum with a visually impactful appearance and a wonderful centerpiece for any collection of American militaria or Americana. CONDITION: painted colors remain sharp but show some wear. Ropes are mostly intact with some broken strands. Top skin is warped but complete. A very solid drum. (02-18998/BF). $2,500-4,000.
