OPENING DOUBLE TRIGGER HEAVY GAME GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4". S# 85883. Francotte true sidelock guns were quite expensive and can be considered rare. They are exceptionally well built and are avidly sought after today. This example has 30" chopper lump barrels of Siemans Martin steel and are fitted with narrow matted game rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Von Lengerke & Detmold" "U.S. Agents New - York". Barrel flats are stamped with 1930 Belgian nitro proof for 2-3/4" chambers along with classic "AF" maker's marks "FRANCOTTE CHOKEBORE". Barrels are also fitted with H&H type self opening assist spring. Case hardened full sidelock action is engraved "A. Francotte Maker & Patentee" "Liege Belgium" on watertable. Action features automatic safety ("S" inlaid in gold), cross bolt third fastener which is coupled with dolls head rib extension, bushed strikers and double triggers (front articulated). Action and lockplates are engraved with near full coverage very nicely cut small scroll with rose bouquet highlights. Fences are more deeply cut with roses, stems and leaves in semi-relief. Bottom of action is engraved with patent information. Single beaded trigger guard is engraved with matching rose and scroll and with S# on tang. Round knob buttstock of dramatically marbled and lightly figured European walnut measures 14-5/8" over checkered horn buttplate. Closely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip with drop points and a vacant gold oval is on toeline. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. WEIGHT: 7 lb. 3 oz. CONDITION: fine as partially refinished. Barrels retaining nearly all of a good quality re-black. Rib matting somewhat softened. Action and lockplates retain at least 50% of their original muted case hardening color with hand worn silver accents on beads and fences. Top lever and trigger guard retain nearly all of their shiny charcoal re-blue. Stocks retain nearly all of a shiny refinish, checkering competently re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny and without any noticeable defects. Action is very slightly loose with a hint of vertical play felt and barrels are very slightly off face, ejectors are strong and in time.
