gunmaker to Karl Theodor (1724-1799) Prince Elector Palatine an Duke of Bavaria. The heavy octagonal barrel is silver inlaid with scrolls at the breech, signed in silver Anton Barman in Munich. It is deeply rifled with elaborate two leaf rear sight and has much original brown finish. The lock is deeply engraved in relief with a hunting scene and the hammer with a man on horseback. The patchbox is mounted in steel engraved with hunting dogs. The large side plate is engraved with the coat of arms of the German nobleman for whom the gun was doubtless ordered by Prince Karl Theodor. The trigger guard and other mounts are deeply engraved en suite. The Circassian walnut stock is beautifully carved with scrolls and flowers and displays excellent figured grain. The gun is entirely original and in fine condition throughout. Anton Bauman is one of the most highly regarded 18th century German gunmakers and his works are prized by collectors.
