A SPECTACULAR ENGRAVED GERMAN SINGLE SHOT TARGET

PISTOL PRESENTED BY KAISER WILHELM II TO CAPTAIN LEON MARTIN, THE PREMIER SHOOTER OF THE WORLD. Cal. 7. 65mm CF. NSN. Spectacular highly finished German copy of the Stevens Lord target pistol. Inscription on its case and presentation card indicate this fabulous pistol was a noble gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II, to shooting match champion Captain Leon Martin. Bbl. 11 5/8" octagon with bead front sight and u-notch rear sight having a fine browned finish. Top flat has gold inlaid marking "H. Leue Hofbuchsenmacher, Berlin". Forward portion of flat has straight-line hand cut matting ending in a scroll and geometric highlight. Both ends of Bbl. have gold inlaid bands, rear band is accented by gold scroll. Stevens Lord style tip up action has full gold plated finish. Full coverage Germanic deep relief engraving features 4 cherubs on each side of the receiver with a grotesque mask on the bottom and a winged angel behind the hammer. Figures are surrounded by foliate scroll with finely stippled backgrounds. Matching scroll continues to grip straps, trigger guard, hammer and buttcap. Bottom of buttcap has intertwined initials "CW". Trigger and hammer spur are finely checkered. Two-piece ebony grips have fine borderless hand checkering. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: presentation box measures 18" by 7 1/4". Outside lid of box and ribboned banner on inside of lid have gold German language marking "Ehrengeschenk/von/Kaiser Wilhelm II./1894". White cloth fitted interior holds wood handled brass cleaning rod and turn screw with interchangeable blades. CONDITION: very fine. Action retains nearly all gold plated finish. Bbl. retains 98% browned finish showing slight edge wear and scattered light marks. Bright bore retains sharp rifling. Grips have very good finish and checkering, right panel has small chips at action. Exterior of case shows wear with small tears in covering at corners. Case interior shows age-related discoloring and wear spots. A cased engraved pair of Smith & Wesson #2 revolvers formerly in the Harold's Club Collection was presented to Captain Martin by the Prince de Galles Roi de Angleterre. (01 – 21880/DS).
