ACGG: DSC's 2019 PRESIDENT'S RIFLE - FN Commercial Mauser 98 Action Rifle in .35 Whelen Caliber
American Custom Ganmakers Guild is pleased to present DSC's 2019 President's Rifle handcrafted through a collaboration of expert craftsmen - FN Commercial Mauser 98 action rifle in .35 Whelen caliber. The metalsmithing on this project was completed by Steve Durrin and, as this is to be a British style rifle, the barrel was turned to a slim and short steep contour. Then after filing and polishing, Steve added a stylish quarter rib with a spear point finial, Talley barrel band sling swivel, and banded front sight ramp with a finial to match the quarter rib. A quick detachable front sight bead and protective hood completed the front sighting system. For the action, a Model 70 type three position safety and Blackburn trigger was added. Using the Sunny Hill trigger guard/magazine assembly, the barreled action was adjusted to insure proper feeding, extraction and ejection of cartridges. He then built a set of scope bases for the Alaska Arms quick detachable scope rings. These are of the dovetail and lever type of arrangement with a bit of a twist. The levers use a quarter turn cam lock to clamp onto the dovetails. The levers are adjustable for tension and wear. The fore and aft locking for recoil is accomplished by a special clamping plate used on the rear ring. This plate has a projection that is fit into a special notch that Steve cut into the side of the rear scope base. The rifle was then prepped and polished for the stockmaking by Dennis Erhardt who crafted a quarter sawn piece with English walnut and shaped the stock in the English style. The most notable detail that differentiates the rifle from the American Classic style is the use of a "pancake" cheekpiece. Some of the other details are more subtle, such as he absence of comb nose fluting, the hard-line transitioning of the butt to the back of the grip, the steeper angle of the lower edge (toe-line) of the butt and the shaping of the forend tip. Dennis used a 1" pad and a cross-bolt to help with the recoil. An inlet rear sling swivel base was used to compliment the one on the barrel. A trap grip cap and ebony forend tip round out the stock furniture. Next, the stock was sanded and whiskered, then passed along to Dennis Earl Smith for final sanding, filling the pores of the wood and bringing up the surface finish. From there the stock went to Dan Rossiter for checkering and the metalwork to Gary Griffiths for engraving. Finally, the rifle was went to Tony Fleming for rust bluing to complete this special one-of-a-kind hand-crafted rifle. A big "THANKS" to all these craftsmen for donating their time and skills for this project. Also a "shout out" to Alaska Arms, New England Custom Gun Service, Sunny Hill, Swift Bullet Co. (Blackburn trigger), Talley Mfg., who were kind enough to supply the necessary parts included in DSC's 2019 President's Rifle.
