Unimak is the only island on planet Earth boasting indigenous populations of brown bear, caribou, wolf, and wolverine. Hunting below the volcanoes on this remote Aleutian Island is a unique experience. Unimak has a dense population of bears which consistently produces Boone and Crockett trophies. The average skull size of males harvested on Unimak Island is 25.5 inches compared to 25 inches on mainland AK Peninsula. ADF&G maintains a low harvest on Unimak to cultivate a quality hunting experience on this wild, rugged island. Only 12 drawing permits are available per season, and odds of drawing are only 4%. The hunter has the choice of a fall or spring hunt (DB375 or DB376); between these seasons harvest is nearly evenly split. Hunter success tends to be higher in the fall (85%) than the spring (75%), however more females are taken in the fall, while daylight is longer and hides in better condition in the spring. BONUS: there is NO big game tag required to hunt wolves on Unimak Island (limit 10 per day). Detailed maps of the area are available at:
