"Sporterized military 1917 Enfield"
This year at our annual banquet APHA has chosen to honor famed Kodiak brown bear guide Morris Talifson with our Tools of the Legends auction.

As an individual guide it is nearly impossible to separate Morris from his longtime partner Bill Pinnell.
Their conjoined names, Pinnell and Talifson , quickly became world famous as two of the best Kodiak brown bear guides between the 1950’s until the 1970’s.

In the spring of 1949, before they began guiding, Morris had been asked by local villagers to kill a massive old bruin that had been seen around nearby Akalura Lake.
He was happy to oblige.
The hide squared almost 11 feet and famous old photos show Morris posing in front of the “near world’s record bear” hide holding his distinctive 30-06 that was built on a restocked and sporterized 1917 Enfield action.

At that time the 1917 Enfield 30-06 was a ubiquitous rifle in Alaska.
Prior to WWII thousands of them had been issued across the territory to arm rural villagers.
Many were used as issued, but it was common to restock and customized them.

This year our Tools of the Legends APHA auction rifle is one of those.
The rifle is nicely balanced, with a good clean bore and the identical and distinctive oval cheek piece and popular Lyman peep sight as the one Morris Talifson is holding up in front of the bear he killed at Akalura Lake in the spring of 1949.
