1) APPOINTMENT SIGNED BY CONFEDERATE SECRETARY OF WAR JAMES A. SEDDON. May 2, 1863 “Captain of Artillery for Ordnance Duty”. ..report for duty to Col. Josiah Gorgas, Chf. Ord.”
2) CROWN FROM TOP OF CONFEDERATE CAP. W/ 2 stands of flat bullion braid quatrefoil. A single strand is found around the perimeter.
3) RED VELVET COLLAR W/ CONFEDERATE CAPTAIN’S INSIGNIA. 3 Flat bullion braids.
4) BELT W/ 2-PIECE “CS” BUCKLE on tarred militia belt w/ tarred cap box. Buckle measures 84mm, wreath height is 47mm. Keeper heights are 47mm & 48mm.
5) SINGLE WHITE SILK LINED SOFT LEATHER GLOVE w/ internal black ink inscription “CAPTAIN BOYD P.A.C.S.A.”
The appointment, crown of Confederate cap & collar insignia all appear impeccable for originality & authenticity. The buckle on the belt is suspect in our opinion though buckle may be cleaned original. The ink inscription inside the glove is also suspect in our opinion. The loose Confederate collar & crown from Confederate cap has inked inventory numbers on versos. James Madison Boyd (1837-1916) was born & died in Floyd County Virginia. He entered service as a private in the 54th Virginia infantry September 16, 1861, he mustered out as 1st Lieut. May 2, 1862. One year later he was appointed captain of artillery in the ordnance department in Richmond. PROVENANCE: Guernsey’s Auction, lot 377, Jan. 25, 2001. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of pages from auction catalog, some genealogical data on Boyd. CONDITION: overall items are good-very good. Glove is unsewn at seam. (02-15471/JS). $3,000-4,000.
