ARTILLERY OF NEW ORLEANS. Alan Abbot Brismade (1831-1910) had a most colorful military career & among the very few Civil War soldiers born in Hawaii. Prior to the Civil War, Alan joined the Illinois militia, volunteers for Utah in the Mormon War of 1858. He settled in New Orleans & joined the Washington artillery April 27, 1860; when the Civil War began he was appointed 3rd Sgt. of the Washington Artillery while in Virginia, later appointed 1st sergeant at Bull Run June 28, 1861 & elected Lieut. November 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieut. of artillery by Jefferson Davis September 1863. Appointed 1st lieutenant in May 1864. He served the entire war & was paroled at Jackson Mississippi May 1865. After the Civil War, Brinsmade joined Mexican resistance as Lieut. Col. against Emperor Maximilian. He returned to New Orleans & was involved again w/ Washington Artillery Veterans Assn.. He is buried in Metairie, LA. 1) CDV in Confederate officer’s uniform holding sword, overall fair condition w/ soiling & penciled identification on verso. 2) Lieutenant appointment request signed by Capt. Otey, General Beauregard’s adjutant, April 14, 1864. Good overall, soiled, cracked at folds, small reductions, all easily read. 3) Inscribed Southern Cross of honor “A A BRINSMADE”. 4) Rarely seen original application “Confederate States of America, Role of Honor” for the Confederate Museum in Richmond, filled out by Brinsmade, detailing his activity in Washington Artillery 1860-1865. 5) Rare Washington Artillery 4 piece veteran membership badge w/ Louisiana state seal above crossed cannons & lion head inside wreath engraved in script on verso “A A Brinsmade April 17th 1860” & stamped “1861-1865 CSA”. Supporting ribbon has WA battles starting w/ Bull Run ending w/ Williamsport. Good condition overall, areas frayed on edges of ribbon. 6) Enameled .75” battleflag representing “Louisiana division, ANV” badge on red and white silk ribbon. Good overall 7) Small .5” gold enamel battle flag, collar tab, poor chipped enamel. 8) 1906 Southern Memorial Association, New Orleans 2 piece gilted brass badge, good overall. 9) 7” “Battalion Washington Artillery” ribbon w/ brass top “WASHINGTON ARTILLERY / U.C.V.” Brass top is separated from ribbon. 10) 1907 R.E. Lee celluloid, good condition. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Xeroxed biographical data & copies of a few photos. CONDITION: as noted above. (02-14879/JS). $3,500-5,000.
