MONROE & THOMAS McKEAN. 1) JAMES MONROE. A signed presidential land grant from James Monroe, dated "8 September 1818". The grant gives 160 acres of land, in the territory of Illinois, to Tinney Hardy, who was a Private in Walbach’s Corps of Artillery during the War of 1812. The land grant is pre-printed and filled in with a dip pen and ink. The document is signed "James Monroe" and also bears the signature of Josiah Meigs. The grant has a sight size of nearly 13" x 9 1/2" and is attractively framed with an engraving of James Monroe and a 6" x 4" engraved plaque with a short biography of James Monroe. The entire frame measures 32" x 24". CONDITION: the document has not been examined out of the frame. It shows evidence of being folded but no noticeable separations. There is minor discoloration, but the document remains clear and perfectly legible. 2) THOMAS McKEAN. A signed document from Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Thomas McKean, referencing a plea of ejectment. Thomas McKean was born in 1734 and died in 1817. He was President of the Continental Congress in 1781 and Governor of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1808. He also has the distinction of being one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence while a member of the Delaware Delegation. The document has a sight size of nearly 13 1/4" x 5 1/2" and is attractively framed with an engraving of James Monroe and a 4" x 2" engraved plaque with a short biography of Thomas McKean. The entire frame measures 28" x 15 3/4". CONDITION: the document has not been examined out of the frame, but it appears quite solid with fold marks and very slight separations at the center fold. The frame is quite solid, with one minor chip to the edge at the top. (02-23058-1/BF). $1,200-1,800.
