Spencer Cavalry Carbine Altered to Two-Band Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #27646, .50 RF cal., 32.5'' round barrel, post-Civil War converted at Springfield Armory to fire metallic cartridges with the addition of a new three-groove barrel and a Stabler cut-off device, in a quantity of only 1,108 guns. ''Model 1865'' and 4-line patent dates and ''Manuf'd at Prov. R.I. by Burnside Rifle Co.'' atop receiver at breech. Retains a Civil War-era Carbine sling bar and ring at left wrist. Originally finished in blue and case hardened metal. Oil-finished walnut stocks having three mostly legible inspectors' cartouches behind wrist, steel crescent buttplate with trapdoor and internal cartridge tube that slides out for loading. Condition is very fine having a smooth brown patina mixed with some original barrel blue; case hardening mostly silvered out. Wood is smooth having sharp edges and showing only minor use and age, quite remarkable for a military rifle. Action is tight and crisp. Bore appears bright. A scarce Spencer. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique) (Joe Poyer collection)
