.40 cal, 33 1/2'' octagon barrel turned for starter with a bright very fine bore showing a little sparse mild oxidation and crisp rifling throughout. The barrel retains a healthy amount of original plum-brown finish with overall toning to gray and showing some old oxidation staining and sparse pinprick pitting. The top flat retains crisp stamped maker markings ''H. BERG. / DAVENPORT IOWA.'' and the lockplate is rather spartan showing some nice smoky case-hardened colors. The fancy spur triggerguard and Berg schuetzen buttplate also retain some remnants of smoky case-hardening along with some oxidation speckling and light staining. The rifle is equipped with under-rib and two ramrod thimbles, pewter nosecap, fancy silver wedge and lock screw escutcheons. The smooth walnut stock remains in very fine condition retaining most of its original varnish with scattered light dings, handling marks and a small gap at the toe against the buttplate. There is a vacant base at the upper tang for mounting a diopter sight, the rear sight is a fine adjustable v-notch and the front is a target globe with fine bead-on-post. A simple replacement wooden ramrod is present and the lock with double set triggers seems to function well mechanically. A nice rifle from the well-regarded Henry Berg of Davenport.
