About American Prairie
American Prairie is a Montana based nonprofit conservation organization whose vision is to
create a vast and collaboratively-managed prairie destination that serves as a fully functioning
ecosystem for wildlife, and offers visitors access to the landscape that shaped our nation’s
character.
The American Bison is part of that vision. American Prairie envisions ecologically significant
herds of bison across the region shaping the ecology of the region as they did historically.
Currently American Prairie owns and manages over 475,000 acres of shortgrass and sagebrush
prairies in North Central and Northeast Montana and its two bison herds number over 900
animals, grazing on over 57,000 acres in the region.
