Civil War light artillery sword carried by enlisted men of the horse artillery. This is the second type of the M1840 with the scabbard fitted with a throat collar to give a waterproof seal with the leather blade washer. Curved single-edged 32" blade with broad single stopped fuller, the ricasso markings appear to have been scrubbed, except for “CHICOPEE/MASS” on the right ricasso, blade appears to have been chromed. (GAR?) Brass hilt with D-guard stamped with unit "1st 54" scroll quillon; angled domed pommel and original leather-bound wood grip with twisted brass wire. Metal scabbard with twin carry rings; smooth with no dents, but scuffs in the finish. No nicks in chromed blade, leather washer in place. conflict Ames M40 Mounted branch Artillery Sword w/ item Scabbard
