The broadsword blade conforms to Oakshott Type XIII a marked at base with an “S” on both sides, single fuller at forte. The russet iron guard on the hand and one half hilt is of a simplified and very early swept hilt form, a late 15th century transition from the horizontal “S” shape crossguard used on most 15th century swords. The leather covered wood grip is typical of swords of this period. Quadrangal pommel with central boss is characteristic of these late 15th century Venetian swords and was preserved until the 18th century on the so-called “cat’s head” pommels of the famous basket hilt Venetian schiavonas. Similar swords are preserved in the Palazzo Ducale armory in Venice and another similar in Leslie Southwick’s Price Guide to Antique Edged Weapons page 25, number 34 and 35 with the earlier “S” shape guards but similar blades and pommels. This is a massive but eminently serviceable broadsword and is of a type very rarely offered for sale. Condition is patinated but very fine overall for a sword of this period.
