Antique Afghan-Middle Eastern Jezail Military Flintlock Smoothbore Musket, NVSN, approx. 64 cal., 35.75'' round barrel with 5'' octagonal breech and a slightly swamped muzzle, has raised rear sight; lock marked ''Wilson'' under pan and ''V/E/I/C'' (East India Co.) within a heart at pointed tail, was adapted from a British East India Co. ''Brown Bess'' rifle; fittings include five brass barrel bands (the wide front band with decorative motifs), single steel rear band; oil-finished hardwood fullstock with leaf carving atop wrist, raised border-carved panels at either side of lock and trigger, two sling loops, no trigger guard, and the style's distinctive curved butt with decorative bone inlay and nails but no buttplate. Condition is about good, the iron surfaces showing a deep brown patina with scattered scars and pitting, the brass dinged and darkened. Stock is sound showing erosion about the lockplate, scattered scrapes, roughness and general signs of great age and hard military use. Lock markings are clear, what might be markings at breech are obscured. Lock is inoperative; smoothbore is clean showing general black-powder erosion. Half-inch leather sling is sound. Often fired from the fork of a tree, Jezails (Arabic: ''long barrels'') were used by Afghan tribesmen against British invaders during the three Anglo-Afghan Wars of 1839-1919. Est.: $500-$700.
