Antique English Brass Barrel Flintlock Holster Pistol, by W. Ketland, NVSN, .56 cal., 7.75'' barrel without sights, marked ''London'' on top flat portion ahead of iron tang adjacent to two deeply-struck Birmingham proofmarks; iron lockplate with long pointed rear teat marked ''W./Ketland/& Co.'' below pan; brass furniture includes serpentine sideplate, triggerguard, buttcap, two fancy fluted ramrod ferrules, and a vacant oval nameplate atop wrist; with oil-stained walnut fullstock. Mfg'd ca. 1810-1830. Pistol appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with unbushed touchhole. Condition is good, the iron with a dark brown color and occasional light rust, the brass with an aged patina; edges and markings are sharp. Stock is solid and smooth, with a secure crack below the lockplate teat, another in the ramrod channel at muzzle, and a 3''x1/2'' chip of original wood at front of lock that was re-attached and could use finishing. Upper buttcap tang could use re-fitting; ramrod is missing. A quality Ketland flint pistol deserving of some attention. William Ketland was the eldest son of Thomas Ketland, who began business in London circa 1760. Action is sticky but functions; smoothbore appears clean. Est.: $400-$600. (Antique)
