Antique European Heavy Barrel Long-Range Percussion Target Rifle, likely of German or Swiss origin, NVSN, .56 cal., 36'' heavyweight octagonal barrel measures 1-1/4'' across the flats at muzzle and is marked ''Jos. Herran'' in silver inlay ahead of the breech, which features a stag etched in deep relief ahead of the floral-engraved top tang; dovetailed large front blade and notched open rear sights; floral engraved steel hammer and lockplate with a unique flash shield and marked ''In Gorkau'' within a scroll; matching sideplate; floral engraved heavy steel triggerguard with fancy front tang and carved wood rear finger-rest; sling swivels on belly of buttstock and at 2nd ramrod thimble; heavy cast-iron buttplate with scrolled bottom and elongated top tang; plain hardwood ramrod with unusual front keeper and scroll-engraved bottom ferrule. Nicely figured European walnut halfstock with carved cheekpiece is deeply checkered at wrist and at midway balance point, has a single barrel wedge with two engraved escutcheons and pleasing color. There is a screw-type fitting at top of wrist, perhaps for some sort of tang sight, now missing. Double set triggers. Condition is very good, the metal parts showing a dark brownish patina with scattered light etching, the buttplate with pitting at sides, the markings and engraving generally sharp. Action functions; bore is brilliant with deep spiral rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
