Antique Halfstock Long Barrel Percussion Plains Rifle, NVSN, approx. .40 cal., 35.5'' medium-weight octagonal steel barrel marked ''J.F. Redwine'' on top flat, with a long very-low dovetailed front sight and dovetailed buckhorn rear; flat iron lockplate has engraved scene of water birds on the wing behind hammer, appears to have been converted to percussion from original flintlock, and is marked (only partially legible) what may be ''Lane & Read/Boston'' in two lines. Double set triggers. Brass furniture including triggerguard with scrolled rear tang and finger rest, crescent buttplate with extended lower tang, percussion bolster, escutcheon opposite lockplate, and one (of 2) ramrod ferrules. Striped hardwood ramrod with brass tip a later replacement. Artificially striped hardwood (likely maple) halfstock with two German silver barrel wedge escutcheons; pewter forend cap. Condition is very good. Metal overall shows a brownish gray gunmetal color with pitting around percussion bolster and at barrel breech; replacement nipple; missing top ramrod ferrule; wood with .75''x.5'' loss at breech; brass with an aged patina. Stock with carved raised cheekpiece is sound, appears to have been sanded smooth and is without cracks or gouges. J.F. Redwine of Lynnville, Morgan County, Illinois, was listed as a ''Premium'' maker of ''Target Rifles'' in the book Transactions of the Illinois State Agricultural Society, Vol. 4, for 1861. Action cocks but triggers do not release hammer; bore appears fairly clean with visible rifling. A simple, serviceable rifle ideally suited for use in the harsh conditions prevalent on the early American frontier. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)
