Antique Marlin Model 1881 Heavy Barrel Lever Action Rifle, #4221, .40-60 CF cal., blued 30'' heavyweight octagonal barrel, with dovetailed blade front and buckhorn rear sights, marked with maker's name, address and patent dates in two lines on top flat, and ''40 Cal'' at breech; blued tubular cartridge magazine; blued receiver with top ejection port is marked ''4221'' at bottom front, and has two screw-filled holes (likely for a tang sight, not now present) on upper tang; loop operating lever; varnished walnut forearm with steel nose cap, matching ''fish belly'' buttstock with steel crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1881, likely first year of production. Condition is very good. Metal surfaces retain traces of original blue with scattered light pitting/discoloration (heavier on receiver sides, the lever loop and buttplate with discoloration, possibly from heating, and perhaps later coloration). Stocks are sound and smooth showing minor marks from age and use, nice grain and color, and much original varnish. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with deep rifling. The first lever-action Marlin, this Model 1881 is unusual with its extra-long (just 780 were made) and extra-heavy barrel, and larger caliber. Est.: $900-$1,500. (Antique)
