Antique ''Metropolitan Police'' Single-Action Spurtrigger Revolver, by Maltby, Curtis & Co., #413, .30 RF cal., 2.875'' octagonal barrel marked ''Metropolitan Police'' on top flat and ''Maltby, Curtis & Co., New York U.S.A.'' with 1879-83-84 patent dates in two lines at left; fluted 5-shot round cylinder is marked ''4-1-3 (cross)'' on rear face; solid frame is constructed to resemble a tip-up S&W pocket revolver, but the front ''hinge'' and topstrap ''latch'' are non-functional. In addition, in place of the trigger and trigger guard is a flat sheet metal plate (a replacement?), effectively making the revolver non-working. Cylinder revolves on cocking hammer but does not hold cock, and there is no trigger. Frame has a large circular boss at left resembling a sideplate, integral flat-butt gripstraps, and ornately decorated hard rubber grips with entwined ''MC'' initials in a circular panel at top. Mfg'd ca. 1870s-80s, originally with full nickel-plated finish, case hardened hammer. Condition is good as configured, retaining approx. 85% bright nickel showing scattered light oxidation. Grips are excellent showing sharp details and fit particularly well. Action is inoperative; bore shows light overall oxidation and faint rifling. Est.: $100-$200. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
