Antique Heavy Barrel Halfstock Percussion Plains Rifle, by Peter A. Reinhard of Loudonville, Ohio, NVSN, .44 cal., 38'' heavy octagonal barrel marked ''P.A. Reinhard'' between rear sight and breech, low blade dovetailed front sight, barrel muzzle turned for bullet starter; long floral-engraved rear barrel tang; floral-engraved serpentine lockplate; percussion bolster with German silver cleanout plug; double set triggers; fancy iron triggerguard with rear finger rest; iron crescent buttplate with long floral engraved lower tang; varnished American walnut halfstock with two large and ornate German silver barrel wedge escutcheons and a matching floral engraved German silver patchbox on left side; pewter nosecap; two iron ramrod ferrules; plain hickory ramrod. Circa mid-1850s. Condition is very good, the iron parts showing no original finish but an overall aged brown patina with scattered darkening and light erosion. Halfstock is smooth, sound and shows excellent color. This rifle appears to be all original and untouched; engraving and markings are mostly clear; percussion nipple mashed; blued rear sight likely a later replacement. Action and set triggers function as designed; bore is clean with defined rifling. German immigrant Peter Reinhard was noted not only for the fine workmanship and high quality of his rifles, as reflected in this piece (and their correspondingly high prices when new), but for his prowess as a nationally-renowned competitive shooter. Est.: $1,000-$1,400. (Antique)
